Code generators produce working code from a description, ranging from a single function to a scaffolded application. They are most effective on well-trodden ground — standard framework patterns, CRUD endpoints, data transformations, tests, configuration — where the model has seen thousands of near-identical examples. They are least effective on anything specific to your system: your conventions, your constraints, your existing abstractions. The security dimension deserves attention too, since generated code reproduces the insecure patterns that are abundant in public repositories.

Frequently Asked Questions About Code Generator AI Tools
Is generated code secure?
Not by default. Studies have repeatedly found meaningful rates of vulnerabilities in generated code, because the training data contains a great deal of insecure example code. The recurring issues are unvalidated input, string-built queries, weak cryptography and missing authorisation checks. Run generated code through the same static analysis and review you apply to everything else.
Why does it reference packages that don't exist?
Because a plausible package name is easy to generate and the model has no registry to check against. This has become a supply-chain risk in its own right — attackers register the hallucinated names and wait. Verify every unfamiliar dependency against the real registry, check download counts and repository activity, and never install a package solely because generated code imported it.
Does it follow my project's conventions?
Only if it can see them. A tool limited to the current file will produce generically idiomatic code that ignores your abstractions, error handling and naming. Tools that index the repository do considerably better. Either way, expect to adjust generated code to fit the codebase rather than expecting it to arrive already fitting.
